Wesabe for the iPhone

Installing

Wesabe for iPhone is free, and is available on the iTunes App Store. You can install it through iTunes on your computer, by clicking "Get App" on the Wesabe page in iTunes, and then syncing your iPhone or iPod Touch with your computer. Or, you can install it directly from your iPhone or iPod Touch by launching the "App Store" application, searching for "Wesabe," and clicking the "Free" button to install.

Signing Up

If you do not have a Wesabe membership, you can create one right from your phone. Just click "Create Membership" when you first launch the Wesabe app. You'll be asked for your email address, which you will use to log in, and which also will help us send you alerts and reminders. You'll also need to enter a password. As always, longer passwords are better, and be sure not to use dictionary words, names, birthdays, or other easily-guessable words.

Your Accounts

Any accounts you have on Wesabe will automatically appear on your phone. When you launch the iPhone app, Wesabe will kick off a download of recent data for all of your automatic accounts. No transaction data is stored on the phone, so you'll always have the latest data on your phone.

You can add a cash account from the phone by clicking the "+" button in the upper right of your Accounts list. Any transactions you add to accounts you create on the phone will appear on the Wesabe site as well.

Adding Transactions

You can add transactions to any account while you're on the go. When looking at one of your accounts, you'll see a "Compose" icon (a pen writing on paper) in the upper right-hand corner. Click that to add a transaction. You can specify where you spent money (or received money), how much, the date, your tags, and your rating. All of these work just as they do on the Wesabe site -- for instance, you can split your transactions in the tags field, like "cash:40 fee:3" for an ATM withdrawal.

If you add a transaction on the go, you can click the "Target" icon to the left of the merchant field. Wesabe will use your phone's location, and the Yahoo! Local API, to find the merchants nearest to where you are standing. Click the merchant name and you won't have to type anything in but the amount.

Editing Transactions

Editing transactions works just like adding them. The only difference is that you can't edit the amounts for transactions from your bank and credit card accounts.

If you edit a merchant we don't recognize, it will be converted from all capital letters to upper- and lower-case letters when you edit the merchant name. Save the edited name to make it permanent.

Graphing your Spending and Earnings

When looking at your Accounts list, turn your phone sideways to see a graph of your spending and earnings. You can scroll the graph back and forth by dragging the picture. Tap any bar to see a detailed listing for that week.

Your Targets

You can see a list of all your targets from the Targets tab. You can add or delete new targets from your phone. As you update your finances, your targets will progress through the month. Turn your phone sideways to see a graph of your targets, too.

Settings

You can protect your finances from prying eyes, without having to lock down your whole phone, with a passcode for the Wesabe app. You can set a four-digit code which will be required to launch the app from then on. This will also protect your financial data in case your phone is lost or stolen.
